Austrade offers METStech Passport for mining companies

The Australian Ministry for Trade, Tourism and Investment is encouraging the country’s best mining technology (METS) businesses to apply for a position in the LATAM Passport programme offered by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade).

METStech Passport is the first of its kind between Australia and Chile, allowing startup and scale-up companies to obtain direct exposure to the mining industry and commercialise their ideas.

The programme will send Australian startups to Chile, and corresponding Chilean startups to Australia, for an immersion in the host country’s mining tech and startup ecosystem. Two spots are available for Australian startups and scale-ups with exploration, sensing, data analytics and digitisation solutions that want to break into the resource rich LATAM market.

METStech Passport applications opened yesterday and close on 27 May 2018. Two winners from each country will receive flights and ground costs for an immersion programme, which includes meeting with potential investors later this year. The programme is being run by Austrade and METS Ignited, in partnership with private non-profit organisation Fundacion Chile.

Australia’s coalition government is focusing on encouraging Australian innovation and believes this programme with fellow mining industry heavyweight and TPP-11 partner, Chile, will enable Australia to pursue common challenges, fostering international collaboration through ideas.

METS is already a AUS$90 billion industry in Australia, with potential for growth thanks to capability ranging from mine safety solutions to environmental management, including mine site closure and rehabilitation. Chile is Australia’s fourth largest METS export market.

METStech Passport is Austrade’s second LATAM programme and follows the successful Agtech Passport launched in 2017.
