Activists charged following Adani contract worker assault

The following statement is made after two protesters charged with assaulting an Adani contract worker appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court on 5 September. The following statement can be attributed to an Adani Mining spokesperson:

“Three individuals have appeared in the Mackay Magistrates Court following protest activity earlier this week on our rail site north of Clermont.

“Two individuals were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in company and deprivation of liberty, following the assault of one of our people during the protest yesterday. The third individual faced charges related to locking-on to a drill rig on the rail site.

“Police have taken video footage from a body camera worn by the contractor employee at the time, which is consistent with the contract employee’s account of events as evidence.

“The footage taken when the worker was pulled and dragged to the ground includes clear audio from the protesters shouting repeated verbal threats of physical harm.

“These actions taken by anti-coal activists were not peaceful or safe, and put simply this type of behaviour is unacceptable.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our employees and contractors at all times. The contract employee who was the subject of the physical assault, along with other employees present during the incident, have been attended to and supported.

“This type of protest behaviour is pointless and a dangerous sideshow. Our construction work on the rail and mine projects have continued on schedule. Meanwhile, because of these dangerous protests people are at risk of being hurt and police resources are being wasted.

“As we have repeatedly said, everyone is entitled to voice their opinion provided they do so in a way that is legal, safe and respectful, and does not put themselves, employees, contractors or community members in harm’s way.”
