A new opportunity to rebuild America’s mining workforce

A new mine or processing facility may take two to six years to move from a funded project towards operation. That sounds like a long lead time, until it is compared with the time required to educate the people who will work there.

A high school student recruited into mining engineering today may be one or two years away from entering college and another four years from earning a degree. Some students already studying civil or chemical engineering may be able to shift into mining engineering, particularly early in their college careers. For college juniors and seniors who have completed much of their discipline-specific coursework, that transition becomes considerably harder.

These timelines make the recent federal commitment to mining education especially welcome. More than US$180 million has been announced for mining schools and workforce development, including up to US$100 million through the Department of Energy’s PROSPECT initiative. With a goal of doubling graduates in mining, minerals, and associated supply-chain fields within two years, the investment gives universities an opportunity to begin expanding the talent pipeline as new domestic mining and processing projects move forward.

Investment meets a pressing need

The opportunity is substantial because the pipeline has contracted. US mining engineering enrollment fell from roughly 1500 students in 2015 to fewer than 600 in 2023. Recent reporting also underscores the scale of future demand: the Department of Energy estimates that the mining sector alone will need approximately 6000 new engineers over the next decade.

Mining engineering is only part of the equation. Mineral processing expertise is also in short supply, while downstream operations may also require metallurgical engineers, especially when refining metals and some critical minerals. Relatively few US universities have metallurgical engineering departments, and those that remain graduate small numbers of students each year. The new investment can help strengthen education across this broader mineral supply chain.

Recruiting follows an academic clock

Turning that opportunity into graduates will require aligning support with the way universities recruit and educate students. Most mining engineering programs bring in freshman cohorts in the fall, with prospective students applying many months earlier. Missing one recruiting cycle can effectively mean losing a year.

Once students arrive, departments need the resources to support them through graduation. Scholarships can attract students to mining and minerals programmes, while sustained programme funding can help departments add faculty, strengthen curricula to reflect the growing role of automation and AI in mining and processing operations, and give prospective students confidence that the opportunity will remain available throughout their education.

Turn momentum into lasting capacity

Mining programmes also tend to be small within their universities. Their long-term health depends on university leaders recognising their value through the industry's economic cycles, particularly as colleges compete for a shrinking population of traditional college-age students.

Federal investment can provide the momentum to recruit more students and strengthen existing programmes. Universities and industry can extend their impact by developing durable sources of support, including endowed scholarships that remain available through changing economic and federal funding cycles.

The minerals being developed today will be needed for decades. The current investment creates a promising opening to build the workforce behind them, provided that the commitment lasts long enough for today's prospective students to become tomorrow's mining and minerals professionals.
