Services in Smart Mining

Global Mining Review,

Historically, when trying to find an unknown place, people fumbled their way using paper maps. Even then, they still relied on asking people to find the final location. Today, in just a few clicks, people are guided to the most remote places. The mining industry is no different and will have to keep up with the rapid pace of technology. It is a long and complex process to transform machines from heavy work horses to smart efficient tools, and to take mining from an empiric and manual labour driven industry to an analytical and strategy driven one. Liebherr has taken the next step toward this digital future by focusing on new digital groups.

In 2020, Liebherr Mining is introducing the new Assistance Systems: a set of onboard, advanced computing applications designed to support operators to become safer and more efficient in their work, through system analytics and actionable insights from the onboard data. The company’s Assistance Systems support the existing machine diagnostics in case of system breakdowns and so provide a powerful tool for operators and supervisors.

Along with these onboard systems, the company has created a second group of applications called ‘Digital Services and Solutions.’ These were created to support the collected data from the Assistance Systems, the machine itself and the surrounding machines to then provide recommendations on a macroscopic scale.

With these two products, the company ventures into the smart-mining era, providing digital supervision over what previously were labour-intensive and human managed tasks. With these new Assistance Systems, Liebherr Mining machines will become smarter tools, contributing to safety and allowing the improvement of the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

”These smart-technologies represent a significant change to the way Liebherr has approached our involvement in the mining industry,” said George Barturen, Program Manager Assistance Systems at the Liebherr-Mining Equipment Colmar factory. “With our already proven, trusted excavator product lines, we are no able to provide even more added value to our customers; taking raw, live data from their own machines, analysing it and then giving recommendations of how to adjust current process to optimise the fleet production.”

Truck Loading Assistant

One of the main software support features is the Truck Loading Assistant. This feature provides information to the operator to avoid trucks from being under or over-loaded in order to help operators achieve the targeted truck payload. The algorithm will notify the operator of the pass loading strategy, the loading tendency and indicates the actual payload per pass as it is being loaded into the truck, enabling increased levels of production and consistency.
