Global Mining Review,
A recognised pioneer in the drilling industry, Boart Longyear has been serving customers for 129 years with the latest drilling innovations and services. At this year’s PDAC 2019 convention, the company will be focusing on how it provides valuable geological data that creates immediate results for customers.
Boart Longyear’s Drilling Services is already well known for safe, hassle-free meters drilled by well-trained and experienced crews with the right technical expertise. Customers are also quickly recognising that Boart Longyear can provide detailed geological data from quality core that is retrieved during exploration activities. Rig and crew availability are already filling up fast for 2019 and 2020 projects.
“It’s not just about drilling,” said Brendan Ryan, Chief Business Development Officer for Boart Longyear. “We deliver time-critical, high-quality information to geologists and mining companies to support educated decisions on where to target the next mineral-rich resource.”
Geological data services
Boart Longyear has introduced a number of geological data services and instrumentation over the last few years to complement its drilling services and products divisions. TruShot™ digital downhole survey technology was introduced in mid-2018 and is used to capture high quality, three-dimensional hole path data and to precisely determine the azimuth and dip measurement of boreholes.
Part of the company’s robust instrumentation lineup is the TruCore™ core orientation tool. Oriented core is increasingly playing an important role in deposit definition and structural analysis. TruCore offers the best way to determine the true direction of the mineralisation of a geological feature, deposit and the associated structure.
An innovation that has quickly caught the attention of the exploration industry is Boart Longyear’s TruScan™ onsite core and chip scanning technology. TruScan provides geologists with non-destructive, accurate, high density elemental concentration data for same-day continuous analysis of drill core.
“Mining companies and geologists are rapidly learning the advantages of having access to tools and services that provide quick and accurate geological data right onsite,” said Mike Ravella, Director of Boart Longyear’s Geological Data Services. “The time to collect the geological data is drastically reduced, significantly lowering the cost of mineral exploration.”
Innovative drilling products and services at PDAC
These and other reliable products and services will be promoted at the Boart Longyear booth (#101) during the international PDAC 2019 exhibition. This annual event, being held 3 - 6 March 2019 in Toronto (Ontario, Canada), is a great opportunity to meet with Boart Longyear experts, product line managers, and leadership.
Boart Longyear invests in the best, compliant and reliable rigs and equipment, and with its global operations is able to offer a wide range of drilling methods including surface and underground exploration, reverse circulation, large rotary, directional and sonic drilling capabilities. Customers will be able to learn more about the available equipment and services by speaking with a Boart Longyear representative during the four days of the PDAC convention.
Also on display in the booth at PDAC will be the complete new lineup of Longyear™ diamond coring bits for a wide range of drilling conditions and ground formations. These bits are engineered to cut faster and last longer. Recently at a US drill site, a single Longyear Yellow bit achieved 3078 ft (938 m), which far exceeded customer expectations, reduced tripping times, increased productivity (more core per shift) and ultimately contributed to the bottom line.
Launched in 2018, the XQ™ coring drill rods have already been reported to reach a successful drill depth of more than 3000 m due to their design, strength and innovative self-aligning thread start geometry.
Operating a well-designed Boart Longyear drill rig with hands-free rod handling, XQ coring rods and Longyear bits, while utilising TruScan, TruShot, and TruCore technologies for capturing geological data, makes for a complete drilling solution for increased productivity on any drilling exploration project.
’Crush It!’ challenge and an exciting future for mining
The company’s engineers continue to work on innovative drilling technologies for the future of mining. As part of Impact Canada’s ‘Crush It!’ challenge, Boart Longyear has joined in a partnership with a group of innovative companies, led by iRing Inc. of North Bay, to develop new clean technology solutions that cut energy consumption for crushing mined rock. The ideas put forth by the group to date have already earned a spot in the semi-final presentations being showcased during Goldcorp Inc.’s #DisruptMining event that coincides with PDAC on Sunday 3 March 2019.
Boart Longyear is positioned to make a huge impact on the exploration and mining community with these innovative products and services that help customers drill better. The company’s experts will be available at PDAC 2019 in booth 101 during the exhibition to discuss more about the company’s drilling services, drilling products, performance tooling and geological data solutions.
