Codelco suspends New Level Mine project

Global Mining Review,

As part of its measures to combat the COVID-19 health emergency that affects Chile and the O'Higgins region, Codelco will temporarily suspend the construction of the developments that are part of its structural New Level Mine project for the Division El Teniente, Chile.

The transitory demobilisation, which affects the Andes Norte, Diamante, Andesita and Recursos Norte projects, had already begun to be implemented since the end of June 2020, encompassing a total of 4500 fewer people on the job, precisely with the aim of lowering the density of own staff and of collaborators, decrease displacement and reduce the possibility of contagion.

The tasks that will continue to be carried out will be those essential for the safety and protection of the work fronts. During the transitional detention period, the restart of the projects, whose peak activity is scheduled for the years 2021 and 2022, will be prepared.

The operation of the El Teniente Division, meanwhile, will continue to develop in the 14x14 shift modality, which consists of 14 days of work and 14 days of rest, which also aims to decrease the exposed endowment and significantly lower the exposure in common areas.

Codelco El Teniente appreciates the effort and commitment deployed by its own workers and collaborating companies, which since the beginning of the health emergency have allowed the continuity of operations and thus not see the generation of surpluses for the country interrupted, which in this pandemic context is more necessary than ever.
