WoodMac expects implications for Indonesian nickel supply following ore export ban

On 30 August, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia officially announced that a ban on nickel ore exports would come into place on 1 January 2020. This is two years ahead of the planned date of January 2022 that was put in place following the relaxation of a previous ore export ban in 2017. The move has serious implications for nickel supply, particularly in China, but also Indonesia. The following commentary from Wood Mackenzie provides its initial views on the impact on nickel supply in 2020 and beyond.
