Enhancing mining conveyor safety with intelligent soft braking systems
Since its inception in 1998, the Svendborg Brakes’ SOBO® (SOft Braking Option) controller technology has continuously evolved to meet the growing demands of the mining industry. These systems are designed to improve safety and efficiency by providing controlled braking that is independent of load conditions on mining conveyors.
The cutting-edge SOBO iQ integrates advanced braking technology, hydraulics, and control systems to meet the increasingly challenging demands of the mining industry. It features a dual-loop PI control (pressure/speed) with an internal pressure control loop, a first in braking systems and incorporates a unique three-state digital modulation, capable of supporting up to four Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs) with defined torque sharing. This system ensures safe, controlled conveyor start-ups and stops, reducing mechanical stress and enhancing the longevity of conveyor components.
The SOBO iQ includes sophisticated features such as overspeed monitoring, rollback prevention, and gear monitoring, all integrated within a user-friendly touchscreen interface. It also offers customisable braking profiles and real-time system monitoring, which are essential for adapting to different operational scenarios.
Svendborg Brakes has also incorporated IIoT capabilities into their SOBO systems, allowing for real-time data monitoring and predictive maintenance. This technology enables the collection and analysis of operational data to optimise maintenance schedules and reduce downtime, which is particularly valuable in remote and challenging mining environments.
In the field, SOBO systems have been successfully implemented in major mining operations, including a large copper mine in Chile, demonstrating their effectiveness in managing high-capacity conveyors and enhancing overall mine safety and productivity.
