Global Mining Review,
The growing demand for sustainable practices in the resource extraction sector is reflected in the development of numerous technological innovations which are designed to enhance energy efficiency in the mining industry. These advancements stand to considerably lower operational expenses for mining companies. Electric machinery not only reduces fuel costs, but also requires less maintenance than diesel-powered alternatives, delivering substantial, long-term financial benefits.
From an environmental perspective, these developments are timely. As the mining industry faces mounting pressure to adopt sustainable practices, the shift to electric and energy-efficient equipment helps companies meet regulatory and societal expectations.
The French underground mining equipment manufacturer, Aramine, is one of the companies making waves in the mining industry, with a range of technological innovations designed to enhance energy efficiency. Solutions, such as those offered by Aramine, support global efforts to minimise the carbon footprint of mining and transition to greener energy sources.
Transitioning to electric and battery-powered machinery
In recent years, companies have intensified their focus on developing electric mining machinery to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Notable among Aramine’s own advancements are battery-powered loaders tailored for use in tight underground spaces. These machines address two key issues: minimising greenhouse gas emissions, and improving air quality in confined mining environments – a pressing concern for the sector.
The company’s flagship models, the L140B and L440B loaders, combine environmental benefits with enhanced operational capabilities. Featuring compact designs and superior manoeuvrability, they are well-suited to the challenging terrains of underground mines. Additionally, their quiet operation reduces noise levels, fostering safer and more comfortable working conditions for miners.
A standout feature of these loaders is their modular energy system, which allows for quick battery swaps in under 10 min. This innovation, featured on the L140B loader launched in 2016, became a forerunner in this market, which was still relatively underdeveloped at the time. The design eliminates downtime, as machines equipped with two energy modules can operate continuously, with only a basic power supply required for recharging. This evolution enables rapid electrification of mining sites, significantly improving working conditions and maintaining productivity.
Furthermore, the L440B loader, launched in 2024, offers a tramming capacity of 4.6 t. This is indicative of the recent advancements made in battery autonomy, making it possible to build ever more powerful, high-performance machines.
It is worth noting that Aramine remains the only manufacturer to have integrated all the necessary technologies into its energy module, including the charger – an essential for electrifying mining fleets without modifying infrastructure.
