A new strategic collaboration between Volvo Penta and J&S Manufacturing has been established to support mining machinery in meeting emissions standards, while maintaining performance and reliability.

The Volvo Penta D5 off-road engine will power J&S Manufacturing’s entire product line, which includes an advanced portfolio of equipment for mining applications in North America. J&S, a Walden Company, is deploying Volvo Penta’s Tier 4 Final/Stage V dual-certification engines, which are designed to contribute to reduced carbon emissions during operation and support improved environmental management. The engines will be supported by distribution partner Wajax, offering local resources and technical assistance for all Volvo Penta product and service needs.

“We’re thrilled to bring this partnership to the industry, combining Volvo Penta’s cutting-edge technology with our proven expertise in delivering tailored solutions for mining customers,” said Jeff Portelance, Director of Business Development at The Walden Group. “Joined with Wajax as a trusted industry distributor, we’re well-positioned to drive major advancements in efficiency, sustainability, and safety across mining operations.”

Powering a clean energy future

Volvo Penta’s engines are optimised for mining applications and certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and CanmetMINING, government agencies for the US and Canada that establish and enforce health, safety, and sustainability standards for the mining industry. In addition, the D5 dual-certification en-gines are engineered to meet stringent EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V standards, and support the reduction of harmful emissions during operations. When integrated into J&S’s power equipment, these engine solutions are designed to enhance fuel efficiency and durability, leading to extended operational uptime and lower total cost of ownership.

“As a trusted partner to a growing number of off-road manufacturers, we need to help them deliver on the needs of today while simultaneously preparing for the transition to a net-zero future,” said Darren Tasker, vice president of Industrial Sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Our partnership with J&S Manufacturing provides mining customers with a platform to make meaningful progress – reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency while also benefiting from a collaborative service approach.”

“Volvo Penta’s expertise in delivering reliable, high-performance engines aligns perfectly with our mission to provide tailored solutions and services that meet the evolving needs of the mining sec-tor,” added Portelance. “We look forward to exploring new opportunities with Volvo Penta, addressing industry challenges and delivering long-term value to our customers.”

Streamlined service for maximum productivity

Volvo Penta’s D5 Tier 4 Final and Stage V engines are built to per-form in demanding mining conditions, providing robust construction and consistent power output to support uptime. Service intervals of up to 1000 hr help optimise efficiency and safeguard productivity. Additionally, all Volvo Penta off-road engines are de-signed based on the same platform, which simplifies everything from installation to service and the acquisition of spare parts.

More than an engine supplier, Volvo Penta works closely with partners and customers to deliver comprehensive solutions that in-crease uptime and drive profitability. When choosing a Volvo Penta-powered engine, mining operators gain access to services such as streamlined installation, aftermarket support, and on-site engineer-ing expertise available even in remote locations.

J&S Manufacturing has already received its first orders for a new Volvo Penta-powered boom truck and scissor lift truck, both in operation in underground mines in Northern Ontario. An additional scissor lift, boom, and ANFO loader truck are scheduled to be de-livered to customers in early 2025.
