Codelco and Hexagon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that sets the foundation for a strategic partnership focused on exploring, developing, validating, and implementing advanced technological solutions throughout the corporation’s operations.

This agreement lays the groundwork for future specific contracts and formal projects designed to strengthen operational safety, deepen automation and digitalisation of production processes, and drive environmental monitoring and analysis tools that contribute to increasingly sustainable management.

The MoU provides the framework for conducting pilots and trials of products under development or not yet commercialised, as well as adapting Hexagon’s technologies to Codelco’s operational challenges. Hexagon is the global leader in measurement technologies, pushing the boundaries of operations technologies and data insights to help customers optimise resources and move material safely.

These initiatives include, among others: fatigue and distraction alert systems; collision avoidance and pedestrian protection technologies; sensors and visualisation platforms for real-time environmental monitoring; artificial intelligence applied to safety and processes; autonomous solutions and truck fleet management systems; advanced tools for assisted drilling; and geospatial analysis capabilities to assess environmental impact and support responsible decision-making.

“This alliance is part of our drive towards digitalisation, with the aim of advancing towards safer, more efficient, and more sustainable mining, while strengthening our engagement with world-class technology partners. We are paving the way for the mining of the future through collaboration, to fulfil our purpose of being a pillar of sustainable development for Chile and the world,” stated Felipe Lagno, Corporate Manager of Innovation and Technology at Codelco.

“We are proud to join Codelco in a partnership that puts safety, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship at the forefront,” said Hexagon’s Mining President, Dave Goddard. “This MoU formalises our strong partnership and provides the foundation for us to work side by side, testing and refining technologies in real-world conditions to ensure they deliver meaningful value for miners and communities. Together, we can demonstrate how collaboration and digital innovation can transform the mining industry for the better.”

The MoU will have an initial term of five years and will be governed by principles agreed by both parties, including confidentiality, responsible use of technical information, and a common framework for project development.
