At Resourcing Tomorrow, Europe’s largest mining event, Max Luedtke, VP and Business Line Manager Mining, ABB Process Industries, said: “With 42% of leaders planning to invest in the decarbonisation of their haulage fleet by 2026, we must take action now, together as an industry.”
This call comes as ABB’s recent report, Mining’s Moment, found that 67% of mining leaders are confident that they will hit their 2030 sustainability targets and that 53% are planning a significant or complete transformation of their mining operations in the next five years to support decarbonisation.
With vehicles being the biggest emitter of greenhouse gas, the report identifies that the industry is working to reduce its impact. 42% of respondents plan to invest in the decarbonisation of their haulage fleet by 2026, while 68% plan to electrify at least 25% of their fleets by 2030.
Luedtke added:
“We say it is mining’s moment because if action has not been taken, it must happen now. The industry needs to take decisive action that will affect change fast enough. The picture is positive overall, with 67% confident that they will hit their 2030 sustainability targets. However, only 15% of those are very confident, while 52% are quite confident. Add to this the fact that 15% of respondents do not believe they will meet their ambitions in the same timeframe, with 30% reporting being behind schedule with their decarbonisation goals, and the picture becomes more urgent. This is the both the moment for mining companies to act, as well as for those already decarbonising to get ahead and succeed.”
Luedtke delivered his keynote address ‘Mining’s Moment: New approaches to innovation and collaboration in electrification, automation, digitalisation and robotics’ at during the Resourcing Tomorrow conference and exhibition in London on Tuesday 3 December 2024.

Decarbonising mining is challenging. While electric and hydrogen solutions show promise, they are still in development and not yet reliable for heavy equipment in demanding environments due to tough conditions and varying infrastructure across regions.
