Global Mining Review,
This agreement includes Project Earthstone in Brazil – a partnership between Anglo American and ZeroEx – which will use the by-product of mining operations as a feedstock.
Mining operators can play a key role in scaling carbon removal. By leveraging existing infrastructure to transform mine tailings and other by-products into feedstocks for technologies such as EW and mineralisation, they have the potential to significantly accelerate deployment.
Project Earthstone is located close to agricultural land and already has stockpiles of fast-weathering EW feedstock with the potential to remove up to 15 million t of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The magnesium-rich feedstock can also improve soil health and crop productivity – particularly in magnesium-depleted soils – alongside removing carbon from the atmosphere.
Tony Oehm, CEO of ZeroEx, said “We’re delighted to be working with Isometric and Anglo American on Project Earthstone. We believe Enhanced Weathering can only scale through close partnership with the mining industry. By combining Anglo American’s operational expertise with ZeroEx’s science and MRV technology, we can launch projects with unprecedented efficiency – transforming mining by-products into valuable feedstocks that remove carbon at scale, improve soils, and support farmers.”
Katie Fergusson, SVP Studies & Development, Anglo American, said: “The primary objective of the Project Earthstone trial is to demonstrate we can generate Enhanced Rock Weathering carbon credits at scale, in a safe, fully verifiable and responsible manner, and our collaboration with Isometric and ZeroEx marks an important milestone toward that goal”
