Weir expands its manufacturing capacity in Africa

The expansion adds a further 1600 m² of dedicated production space and includes two 57 t gantry cranes operating at a clearance height of 18.5 m.

The Alrode facility now has two dedicated assembly stations for Weir’s high-capacity, ENDURON® Elite banana screens, which have deck dimensions of up to 4.3 m wide by 8.5 m long and can weigh up to 50 t.

Aside from the variable speed drive used to start up the screens, the facility runs entirely on renewable energy generated by its solar powered system.

Bridget Ledwaba, Weir, Managing Director for Africa said: ‘Weir has been awarded a number of significant projects in the last few years, including Barrick’s Reko Diq project, which has led us to increase our manufacturing capacity to ensure we can deliver these orders on schedule.

‘Africa is a major mining region and Weir has always prioritised being close to our customers. This expansion means that we’re now well placed to better service our regional customers.’

Corné Kleyn, Weir, Global Product Manager Vibrating Equipment said: ‘When Weir launched its range of ENDURON® Elite screens a few years ago, we knew there was a demand for new, high-capacity screening solutions. As the largest screen on the market, it’s been immensely well received. We’ve been planning our facility expansion for a long time to ensure we can continue to meet demand and the fact that it’s come so soon after the launch is a testament to not only how good a product it is, but also how much the mining industry needed it.’
