The World Coal Association (WCA) has welcomed the decision by the Queensland government to issue the final major approval for the Carmichael coal project.
Queensland’s Coordinator-General approved a 31.5 km section of permanent rail line – part of the 388 km railway that will link the mine to the port at Abbot Point – and a temporary construction site for the AUS$22 billion project.
“This is a milestone for the project,” said Benjamin Sporton, WCA’s CEO. “The mine will supply Indian power plants with enough coal to generate enough electricity for up to 100 million people, ensuring reliable and affordable electricity to India and surrounding countries.”
The project is owned by Adani, India’s top coal-fired generator and biggest solar power producer. Construction is expected to being next year, while the mine will produce up to 60 million tpy when fully developed.
“For Adani, it is a demonstration of the company’s continued commitment to investment in coal and high environmental standards,” continued Sporton. “For a project that promised thousands of jobs, it will benefit the people of Queensland, ensuring a strong economic future for the state.”
