The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) Buick Mine and Mill, part of the company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) in Missouri, has earned the highly coveted Sentinels of Safety Award for outstanding safety performance in the Underground Metal Mine category. Doe Run received the award on 6 November 2017 at an awards dinner in Washington, D.C.

The Sentinels of Safety Award honours mining companies in various operational categories for achieving the greatest number of employee work-hours without an injury that resulted in lost workdays. To qualify for a Sentinels of Safety Award, a company must complete at least 4000 employee work-hours during the year without a lost-time injury or fatality.

This marks the seventh Sentinels of Safety Award for Buick Mine and Mill and 28th award for Doe Run and its predecessor companies. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), the Sentinels of Safety Awards were developed in 1925 by then Commerce Secretary, President Herbert Hoover, (a former mining engineer), and are recognised as one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious occupational safety awards.

“Safety is a priority throughout all of our operations at The Doe Run Company, and we are proud Buick Mine and Mill are committed to ensuring the overall safety of themselves and their co-workers,” said Steve Batts, Vice President, SEMO operations. “Ongoing safety trainings, daily safety meetings, and required safety observations help us maintain a safety mindset on and off the job,” he added.
