SRK Consulting, a UK-based mining industry specialist, together with a group of international consultancy firms are formulating a national strategy for developing Oman’s promising mining sector.

Agreements were signed by Hilal bin Mohammed al Busaidy, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Authority for Mining (PAM), with Dr Tim Lucks, Principal Consultant for Geology and Project Management at SRK Consulting. Also present at the signing were executives such as Wood Mackenzie and Mayer Brown who represent the global legal firms who will also play a part in formulating the Omani Mining Strategy.

Al Busaidy said the Mining Strategy will provide a clear direction for the development of the sector over the next decade. “This initiative will be put together by this group or companies that are specialised in strategic planning with specific focus on the mining sector. The strategy will be built around 12 key pillars focusing not only on investment, but also environmental protection, social engagement, skills development, and so on.”

This will work in creating a global mindset for the Omani mining sector, Al Busaidy said of this: “We want a strategy that is suitable for implementation in Oman and will take into consideration existing commercial, geological, environmental and other factors imperative to the successful development of the sector.”

SPK Consulting and the collaborating firms have been given a six-month timeframe in which to deliver the mining strategy.
