Caterpillar has announced West Gold Mining Limited’s installation of two Cat G3500K series gas generator sets supplied by Borusan Cat for prime power at a new gold mining operation in the Aktobe region of Kazakhstan.

In the remote Aktobe region of Kazakhstan, a new gold mining operation is taking shape. Built from the ground up in a location without access to grid power.

With the site located nearly 300 km from the nearest city and no existing electrical infrastructure, West Gold Mining Limited needed a solution that could deliver reliable, continuous power from day one. Extending grid infrastructure was considered, but distance and cost made onsite generation a more practical option.

A detailed feasibility study showed that a self-sustained gas power solution could help reduce reliance on external infrastructure while supporting the mine’s immediate operational needs and future growth plans. To support continuous operations, West Gold Mining Limited and Borusan Cat selected two new Cat® G3500K series gas generator sets, designed to run in prime power mode and provide dependable off-grid power.

“We needed a power solution that could operate independently off the grid while supporting our long-term plans. The Cat solution, along with the local support provided, gave us confidence in both performance and future scalability,” said Beken Erik, chief executive officer, West Gold Mining Limited.

Off-grid power designed for growth The Cat G3500K gas power solution is designed to operate in island mode independent from the grid, generating the power required onsite. By balancing efficiency, performance, and scalability, the system provides a foundation that can adapt as production requirements evolve.

‘‘This project demonstrates how we help customers solve practical energy challenges by delivering reliable, scalable power systems backed by local expertise, service, and long-term support,’’ added Melissa Busen senior vice president, Cat Electric Power.

Designed for real-world conditions With temperatures ranging from -30°C in winter to more than 30°C in summer, the Cat containerised enclosure configuration was selected to support reliable operation in demanding conditions. As construction continues, the scalable power system is expected to play a critical role in enabling production and supporting future expansion.

Local support for long-term operation Beyond product performance, West Gold Mining Limited prioritised having local service, reliable availability of parts and on-the-ground support.

Borusan Cat’s technical collaboration and established support capabilities helped provide confidence in both the solution and the team behind it. A Customer Value Agreement is planned following installation and commissioning to provide peace of mind and maintenance support.
